And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
Joshua 24:15
In 1776 the events which would lead to the Colonies seeking to govern themselves had come to a point where the Colonies had to "fish or cut bait." The founding fathers had placed themselves at risk of being tried for treason and it was done under the watchful eye of the King through Tory sympathizers. British troops were enroute even as the final decisions and preparations were being made to seek independence.
[I recently read somewhere that if the 2000 presidential election had not been resolved, that the United States would have reverted to English rule if it ceased to be able to govern itself as a condition of independence. ]
The founding fathers came to a point where they had to choose what they could live with as a government. They chose freedom, but that freedom came at a cost. Their declaration of intent did not win their independence, merely called them to act with perseverance and endurance, living in a country at war around their very homes.
They made their decision as we must make ours to receive salvation and again daily to display our intent when we declared our independence from the effects of sin. We can be dependent or independent of the evil or the Lord, but it requires these choices.
Lord, let my daily choices indicate to you whom I have chosen to serve. Let me be dependent upon you and independent from the snares of this world.
Deborah
